The name Demiplaner comes from the idea of a demiplane—a small world existing alongside ordinary reality, often reached through magic in fantasy worlds.
We loved the image immediately.
Our work often takes us into spaces that are not quite part of ordinary, everyday consciousness.
Ways of entering
Between body and language, sensation and meaning.
Between waking thought and the unconscious; imagination and reality. These spaces can loosen the rules of the familiar world and allow us to perceive something differently.
Image & dream
The unconscious takes form without becoming a fixed answer.
Sound & sensation
Something difficult to name becomes possible to encounter.
The return
Like entering a demiplane, we may arrive through movement, an image, a dream, a sound, or a sensation we cannot yet explain.
But the point is not to stay there.
We go somewhere else in order to bring something back.

半位面儿
And why the “r”?
Something smaller, warmer and a little more mischievous.
In Chinese, we call ourselves 半位面儿 (bàn wèimiànr).
The final r echoes erhua, the playful, diminutive sound found especially in northern varieties of Mandarin. It takes something that could sound mystical or grand—a mysterious dimension between worlds—and brings it closer to everyday life.
That matters to us too. We are interested in depth, but not in making depth heavy.

To meet complexity, uncertainty and the deeper layers of human experience without becoming solemn, rigid or overwhelmed by them.
