The Free Voice: Reconnecting Sound, Breath, and Body

This class is for anyone who wants to improve their use of voice:

  • Singer / Actor / Teacher / Leader, Healer / Communicator, etc.

  • As well as, anyone who longs to hear their true voice again.

Because I know that you don't just want to have a voice that sounds good to others, you want to have a voice that is more in line with your true self, your true expression. Your own voice.

It doesn't mean that there's only "one way" to hear it, but that at any given time, you can--

  • Feeling supported by your body and breath while speaking or singing.

  • Let the voice carry sincerity and thickness rather than pleasing others.

  • Connecting the physical, emotional and spiritual wholes through sound.

"Avoid unnecessary exertion and the true voice will be found. Let go of unhealthy control and natural control will be evident.

-- The Free Voice, Cornelius L. Reid"

So how would we cut through the real sound?

This is not a technique class, and there is no test for a "good voice", so if you are not confident in your voice, or just don't want to be heard, you can practice in your own safe environment.

It is an integrative approach that allows you to re-establish a complete connection between body-breath-sound-environment.

The exercises we use are largely inspired by the following methods, with the addition of many self-created imagery, movement combinations that I personally practice regularly:

  • Feldenkrais: Awareness of Parasitic Exertion, Awakening Natural Support

  • Linklater: freeing up the voice and releasing long-suppressed energy

  • Embodied Mindfulness Breathing: Letting the Breath Transform Naturally into Vocalization

  • BMC: Awakening the sound field from deep within the body, the inner organs resonate with the outer environment

  • Subconscious / Spiritual / Imagery Approach: Understanding the Subconscious Roots, Trauma, and Obstacles to Vocalization Through Dreams and Symbols

  • Writing and Drawing: Exploring, Integrating, Witnessing
